Dahlias are named after the 18th century Swedish botanist Anders Dahl, who was a student of Carl Linnaeus. Dahlias were first discovered in Mexico and were brought to Europe in the late 1700s. Today, there are over 42,000 registered dahlia cultivars, making them one of the most diverse and versatile garden plants in the world. They come in a wide range of colors, sizes, and shapes, from tiny pom-poms to dinner plate-sized blooms. Some varieties can even grow up to 12 feet tall!
