    Lomelosia caucasica, also known as Caucasian pincushion, is a flowering plant species that belongs to the family of Dipsacaceae. An interesting fact about this plant is that it is considered a “living fossil” because it has remained virtually unchanged for over 32 million years. This plant has been found in fossils dating back to the Oligocene epoch, which ended around 23 million years ago, and it still exists in the same form today. Lomelosia caucasica is native to the Caucasus Mountains in Eastern Europe and Western Asia, and it is an important part of the region’s ecosystem, providing food and habitat for various animals and insects. The Madagascar Periwinkle (Catharanthus roseus) is a plant species native to Madagascar that is known for its bright pink or white flowers. However, what makes this plant especially interesting is that it contains a variety of alkaloids, including vincristine and vinblastine, which have been found to be effective in the treatment of certain types of cancer, such as Hodgkin’s lymphoma and leukemia.

In fact, vincristine and vinblastine were first isolated from the Madagascar Periwinkle in the 1950s, and they have since become important chemotherapy drugs. While the Madagascar Periwinkle is toxic in large quantities and should not be consumed, the plant has provided valuable medical benefits and continues to be studied for its potential therapeutic properties.
